Why a monster?
True, Charybdis was a monster who lived on the Sicilian coast of the Strait of Messina, close of the town of Messina.
The reason for naming a biotech company after a monster?
Well, first of all Charybdis is a monster in the etymological sense (see the latin word mostrum) i.e. someone or something who causes admiration or wonder.
Although sailors saw Charybdis (and the other monster, Scylla, living in the opposite shore) as destructive forces causing shipwrecks, Charybdis is a symbol of the mystery and fascination that surrounding the Strait of Messina.
